Post 3: Rosette symmetry

  1. If you look close the center of the flower has four round balls. Each of these correspond to two yellow petals which can be reflected across the vertical and horizontal axis and rotated 4 times in 90 degree increments . Therefore, the flower is best characterized as having dihedral symmetry, d4.

  2. At first glance you might think that this rosette pattern is a d8 because it has four larger petals around the outside. However, if you look more closely there are four round filaments that correspond to the outer petals meaning that it is actually a d4.
